DROWNING NOT WAVING
Artists: Jill Orr, Penelope Davis, Peter Lemalu, Emma Davies, Clinton Naina, Paul Handley, George Basil Alokaka, Florence Folole Tupuola, Ella Benore Rowe, Yasbelle Kerkow
In reference to James Reyne’s 1998 song (‘Not Waving, Drowning’) and Stevie Smith’s 1957 poem (‘Not Waving but Drowning’), which both refer to matters of the heart, this exhibition applies the same phrase to issues of the earth. Taking a global perspective, this extraordinary exhibition looks at climate change in the 21st century. What were we thinking when we kept plundering the earth with little thought for the future? And how did we not react to the warning signs sooner? These ten artists explore the concerns of and solutions to global warming.
