IDENTITY

Artist: Susan Maco Forrester

IDENTITY presents new work by Susan Maco Forrester, who looks at questions of identity. Susan is a GLBTIQ woman of Somali and Scottish heritage. Susan’s family came to Australia as ‘Ten-pound Poms’ in 1974. Her mother was the first Somali woman to settle in Australia. Identity has always been a question Susan has been forced to answer. Cultural theorist Stuart Hall asked, ‘How much do we retain and how much do we give up of our cultural identity in order to be ourselves?’ Susan used video, installation, sculptural objects and photographs to participate in a dialogue with artists, audience and community members about the complex issues raised by this question.
