REFERENDUM
Human Status
Artist: Brian Martin
Human Status marks the 50th anniversary of an important moment in Australian history, the 1967 Referendum. After decades of campaigning by tireless activists, the Referendum saw Australians vote overwhelmingly to amend the constitution to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and allow the Commonwealth to create laws for them. Brian Martin, a descendant of the Muruwari, Bundjalung and Kamilaroi peoples, has created life-like and life-size paintings of people who were born before the Referendum. Aboriginal people from far-west NSW are captured in touching real-life poses.

VISITOR COMMENTS
Brian, these are marvelous paintings. Great work and timely to present to all Australians and think of the country in its night spirit regarding its past and present.

The best and most meaningful exhibition shown in this gallery for many years (maybe ever).
